Dr. Cornelis de Hoop, Associate Professor

Cornelis F. "Niels" de Hoop is an Associate Professor in the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center at the LSU Ag Center, where he has worked since 1992. Prior to obtaining his PhD at Texas A&M, he worked 12 years in the forest products industry, mostly in logging supervision, timber procurement, and log yards, in Canada and east Texas. He also has two years of experience in government forestry in Kentucky (USFS) and Hawaii (state). He has an MBA from Stephen F. Austin and a BS in Forestry from Kentucky. At LSU, he teaches courses in timber harvesting, procurement and GIS. His research activities have included expert systems for veneer lathe diagnosis, assessment of cut-to-length harvesting, stormwater runoff from log yards, wood supply for chip mill, wood residue supply and demand, accidents in the forest products industry, and biomass energy.

Expertise: Worker accidents and safety, environmental aspects of wood products processing, wood residue utilization and operations research/expert systems/GIS applications to the forest products industry.

Dr. Todd F. Shupe, Professor

Todd Shupe received his B.S. and M.S. degree from the University of Illinois and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. He currently serves as Director of the LSU Wood Durability Lab, which is an IAS accredited testing laboratory. The lab provides a wide variety of wood durability testing services for the wood preservative industry. His current research interests include novel methods of recycling decommissioned preservative-treated wood, development of "green" wood preservatives, supercritical fluids, and bio-based processing of low-value trees or bio-based waste into bio-energy, bio-composites, or bio-chemicals. His past research was in the areas of wood quality, rapid assessment of wood properties, wood composites, finite element analysis, and utilization of agricultural fibers.

Dr. Shupe teaches graduate level courses on treated wood recycling and advanced wood science. He is currently the major professor for three Ph.D. students and one MS student; and supervises two post-doctoral research scientists and two visiting scientists. He has secured over $2,000,000 in grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has one US patent, one Japanese patent, and two US patents pending. His research has been supported by the Louisiana Board of Regents, USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station, US Forest Products Lab USDA National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program, and the wood-products industry

Expertise: Closed-loop recycling of decommissioned preservative-treated wood, wood durability, wood quality, and wood composites.

Dr. Richard P. Vlosky, Professor
Director, Forest Products Development Center

Rich Vlosky is Director of the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center and Professor of Forest Products Marketing. He received a Ph.D. in Wood Products Marketing at Penn State University, a Masters Degree in International Forest Products Trade from the University of Washington and a Bachelors Degree in Natural Resources and Forest Management from Colorado State University. His research includes Forest Certification, Internet Business, and International and Domestic Market and Economic Development. Dr. Vlosky has spent his 29-year academic and working career in the wood products industry. He has over 300 publications and 350 national and international public presentations. Dr. Vlosky previously was: Vice President Sales and Marketing Optical Data Systems, Inc.,

Expertise:  Domestic and international wood products marketing; technology applications to improve wood products business competitiveness; marketing applications to economic development; environmental certification and marketing; value-added product opportunities.

Dr. Qinglin Wu, Roy O. Martin Sr. Professor
Composites/Engineered Wood Products

Qinglin Wu holds the Roy O. Martin Sr. endowed Professorship in Composites/Engineered Wood Products at the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center, School of Renewable Natural ResourcesHe holds a Ph.D. degree in Forest Products from Oregon State University an M. Eng. Sci. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Tasmania, Tasmania Australia and a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering from Henan Agricultural University His past experience includes research on preservative-treated structural panels, chemical coupling in wood polymer composites, wood surface chemistry, heat and mass transfer, wood and wood composite mechanics, dimensional stability and durability of wood composites, and utilization of agricultural fibers. Dr. Wu teaches graduate level courses on wood composite mechanics and wood composite manufacturing at LSU. He is currently the major professor for three Ph.D. students (two on wood and polymer chemistry and one on composite mechanics) and one MS student (wood composite); and supervises a post-doctoral researcher (composite mechanics) and two visiting scientists. Dr. Wu has secured over $1,000,000 in grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. He has authored over forty refereed publications and over sixty technical reports, abstracts, and conference proceedings. His research in wood-based material technology has been supported by the Louisiana Board of Regents, Governor's Biotechnology Initiative, USDA National Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program, National Science Foundation, and the wood-products industry

Expertise: Wood composite, wood moisture relations, wood drying, mechanical properties and dimensional stability of wood-based materials.

LFPDC Faculty at Louisiana Tech

Dr. Mark D. Gibson, Professor

Mark D. Gibson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from Clemson University in 1972, a Master of Science degree in Forestry from Clemson University in 1974, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Forest Products from Oregon State University in 1982. He has thirty years of experience in research and teaching of wood technology and utilization at major U.S. universities including California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo, Clemson University, Oregon State University, and Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Gibson is currently Interim Director of the School of Forestry and Professor of Wood Utilization at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA and has been a faculty scientist with the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center since its inception in 1992. He has over 75 publications and over 60 presentations at professional meetings. He has served as a member of the graduate faculty at Louisiana Tech University and an affiliate member of the graduate faculty at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His current research examines the influences of forest management practices on wood quality in plantation-grown and naturally-grown hardwoods and southern pines, and the influence of wood quality on manufacturing processes.

Expertise: effects of intensive forest management practices on wood quality, effects of wood quality on manufacturing processes, primary and secondary wood products processing, wood anatomy, wood species identification, and microscopy.

Dr. George A. Grozdits, Associate Professor

George A. Grozdits received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1959, a Master of Science degree in Wood Technology from Virginia Tech in 1967, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Wood Science from Virginia Tech in 1971. He has twenty-six years of experience in the forest products industry and nineteen years of experience in research and teaching at major U.S. universities. He has served as an affiliate member of the graduate faculty at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. His international experience includes consulting in South America, Europe, Canada and the U.S.A. Dr. Grozdits has served as a consultant on wood in-service, wood adhesives and plant equipment and process modifications. He has been with the Louisiana Forest Products


Expertise: adhesives, basic wood products manufacturing (including veneer, plywood, fiberboard, and oak flooring), wood chemistry, and bagasse utilization.
