Research Brief #28

Evaluation of Degrade in Red Oak Lumber Due to Air-Drying and Kiln-Drying from the Green Condition
(La Tech FPL-1.5)

Louisiana Forest Products Development Center
Louisiana State University
Baton Rouge, LA

Research Objectives

The purpose of this study is to look at development of degrade in red oak lumber in drying from the green to air-dry to kiln-dry condition.

Synopsis of Results

Lumber was obtained at Louisiana Tech's 40th Annual Hardwood Log, Lumber, and Tree Grading Workshop. Data on lumber grade yield was obtained for 28 logs. The lumber from five logs was measured in detail and all defects located on both faces of the lumber within one week of log breakdown. Air-drying was accomplished between March 17-July 20, 1995, at which time defects were remeasured on the five-log sample. Kiln-drying was performed by a local sawmill in August, 1995. Defects on the five-log sample were measured again. The lumber was surfaced on February 22, 1996 and graded by a NHLA-certified grader.

Progress

Summarization of data are in progress. Percentage degrade from green to air-dry to kiln-dry conditions is being estimated.
